Loretta Saunders, 26
Loretta Saunders was a 26-year-old Inuk woman and graduate student at Saint Mary's University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She was completing her thesis on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women when she was tragically murdered in February 2014. Loretta was a passionate advocate for Indigenous rights and had dedicated her academic work to raising awareness about the very crisis that would claim her life. Her death sparked national outrage and renewed calls for a national inquiry into MMIWG.
